Abnormally high temperatures will impact the Northern Rockies into Tuesday. Forecasted highs for the valleys of north central Idaho and western Montana range from the low 90s to low 100s (lower valleys of north-central Idaho) with today likely seeing the hottest temperatures. If you are planning to spend time outside, remember to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon. While the temperatures may be hot, streams and rivers are still running cold and swift, posing the risk of hypothermia.
Showers and thunderstorms will return to the Northern Rockies Tuesday into the weekend. The storms that develop on Tuesday will be capable of wind gusts in excess of 40 mph. While the stronger storms on Wednesday afternoon could produce heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds. Thursday onward storms appear to generate light to moderate rainfall with low probability of small hail. The main areas of concern will be along the Continental Divide and also south of the Highway 12 corridor. If you have delicate outdoor objects, consider securing them. And remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
